Biography

Chris Venn performing live

Chris has worked in the music and entertainment industry for many years. Starting out as a soloist with twelve string guitar he played Sydney restaurants, wine bars and markets. As he developed as a writer and performer he formed a duo with journalist and music critic Michael Delaney. Specialising in close vocal hamonies and featuring original songs in their act, they added new members morphing into the Delaney/Venn band, going on to record an album and two singles.

Produced by Spencer Lee  and co-produced by Tony Hogarth, the album "Neon Heart" (6437 132) was released on Polygram via Leo Recorders.  The album was styled with a mix of electro-pop and smooth reggae, with a dash of funk thrown in. The first single "Prisoner" received wide air-play; hourly on Radio 2SM for several weeks.   Marcia Hines featured on backing vocals. Tony Hogarth is quoted as saying " I advise all who are interested that this group and Spencer Lee allowed me to co-produce one of the greatest albums I have ever had the pleasure to work on and I would like to thank eveyone who worked on it; especially Marcia who did the backing vocals of a lifetime!"

The studio sessions featured the collective talents of Chris Venn vocals/guitar, Michael Delaney vocals/guitar, Paul Wheeler, bass (Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Band of Talabene, MacKenzie Theory) and Tony Doyle, drums (who has worked with performers such as Garry Moore, Judy Bailey and Jackie Ozarski). Phil Treloar, one of Australia’s best jazz drummers was also a guest artist. Andrew Thomas Wilson, contributed greatly to the sessions with his synthesisers and keyboards. Other creatives on this album were Terry & Mona Lisa YoungLori Balmer, John Sammers and Phil Rigger (Outline). Doug Rowe (ex Flying Circus, Grand Junction, Woodpickers) featured on guitar for the track  "Prisoner".

Delaney/Venn made appearances on ABC's Countdown, then joined Air Supply on their Australian Tour during which time Air Supply's single "The One that you Love" began charting in USA. The touring band included Chris Raggett, guitar (Matt Finish) and Gary Fredericks (ex Stuart Park).

After Michael's sudden passing in 1982, Chris formed a duo "Cleen Cut" with Paul Wheeler. They worked the Sydney music scene throughout the decade playing residencies at Kings Cross Rex Hotel, Bondi Hotel, Epping Hotel and other classic Sydney venues. They entertained in the Snowy Mountains, performed at weddings, harbour cruises and various social functions.

From 1987 to 2013 Chris worked at the Sydney Opera House  as a lighting supervisor/designer, where he had the privilege to work with a wide variety of international talent, developing his ability to deliver excellent production values. He also established his home recording studio and continued writing music and songs. In 1996 he commenced a BA in music composition at the Australian Institute of Music.
